What does the evidence show?

A systematic review indexed in PubMed reported that capsaicinoids/capsinoids may increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation and may influence appetite. The important nuance is magnitude: average effects in controlled studies are generally small, and results depend on dose, tolerance and study conditions.

Small changes in laboratory endpoints should not be translated into dramatic claims about pounds lost, calories burned, or effortless fat loss.

Dose and formulation matter

Red pepper powder, standardized capsaicin, capsinoids and food-based chili exposure are not interchangeable. When reading research about red pepper/capsaicin, start with the exact material that was studied, the amount used, the people enrolled and the outcome measured. Research on thermogenesis, sensory effects and energy-expenditure research can provide useful context, but those details determine how far the finding can reasonably be generalized.

For a multi-ingredient supplement, the next question is whether the finished product supplies a comparable form and exposure.
