Fat Oxidation vs Thermogenesis: What Is the Difference?

“Burning fat” can describe several very different things. Fat oxidation is the use of fatty acids for energy; thermogenesis is heat production. Neither phrase automatically means a person is losing body fat.

Fat oxidation

Cells can oxidize fatty acids to produce usable energy. The proportion of fat versus carbohydrate used changes with exercise intensity, recent meals, hormones and energy status.

Thermogenesis

Thermogenesis is heat generated by normal metabolism, digestion, movement and responses to environmental temperature. Some compounds can modestly alter thermogenic measures under controlled conditions.

Body-fat loss

Losing stored body fat over time requires a sustained net reduction in stored energy. A study showing higher fat oxidation for a few hours does not necessarily show greater fat loss over weeks.

Why the language matters

Advertisements often move quickly from “increased oxidation” to “burns body fat,” or from “thermogenic” to a promised weight result. These are different evidentiary steps and should not be collapsed.
