A calorie is a unit of energy. Human metabolism continuously transforms chemical energy from food and stored fuels into work, heat and biological maintenance.

Resting energy needs

Even at rest, the body requires energy for circulation, breathing, ion gradients, protein turnover, brain activity and other essential functions. Resting metabolic rate is influenced strongly by body size and lean mass as well as age, sex and genetics.

Physical activity

Exercise is only one part of activity expenditure. Walking, standing, household tasks and spontaneous movement can add substantial variability between people. This is one reason a single “calories burned” number cannot describe everyone.

Processing food

Digestion, absorption and nutrient storage also consume energy. This thermic effect varies by macronutrient and meal size. It is real but typically a fraction of total daily expenditure.

Stored fuels and fat oxidation
